I just sat down a watched the first 1/4 of the new Sherlock.  Entertaining, but I am remembering the inherent problem in basing anything on the Irene Alder story.  See, I just had this conversation with my sister over the weekend, about how neither of us like the kind of story where you can see the train coming and know there is no way off the tracks.  Nearly every Sherlock Holmes story is the antithesis of this.  Sherlock as a character is competence porn in the extreme.  When first reading the stories this makes the few where something goes wrong very surprising and rather awesome.  However, if you know the canon, any rewrite of A Scandal in Bohemia is doomed to be an exercise in 'I can't look!'.

I am disappointed that this in one of only three new episodes.  I may have to consume this one in small chunks, and hope the next is more to my personal tastes.  I'll let you know what I think when I finish watching it.

Well, it has been way too long since I posted something here, and I really have no excuse.  I check this account every day.   I just didn't have anything to say.  And after a while, any thing you might say seems way to dumb to break a long silence with. I'm just not very good at this.  I hardly even call my mother!

Still, I have been working on my sewing skills, and since this few weeks are all the winter holidays, I have needed to finish off the projects that were intended as gifts.  Here are some pics for you guys.

We leave for Pennsic in the early hours of Thursday morning. Packing has now started in earnest. The tent is all ready to go, archery stuff sorted and ready. Sewing list is looking up, but not complete yet. Time is getting short.

So tomorrow I have to go back to work.  The concept seems a bit weird after a week off, especially since it isn't like I having been working hard while I was off.  I started the week with a cold, but a few days at the beach really seemed to help me fight it off, so I got back home feeling much better.  This was good because since then it has been all either painting the house or sewing for Pennsic.  The weather has been perfect for painting, even if I got more sun doing that then at the beach.  It was good to be outside, even if I thought my arms were going to fall off some mornings.

The sewing has also been fun, there is just a LOT of it to get done, and not much time left.  Sewing for Gallifrey or even Birka is all about quality, crafting one of two pieces you really want to show off.  Sewing for Pennsic is all bout volume.  You need to produce enough clothing to last you and another person for over a week (with no laundry available).  Even for those of us with something of an existing wardrobe, it is a challenge. And much of C's stuff is pretty old and worn.

That's really long, but I am feeling good about how much more is done on it after this week.  If everything goes smoothly,I might just manage it.

So this is what I did today.

Yep, that's me up a ladder.  Spent 10 hours (minus lunch break) today painting the house.  Now I have sore feet, bruises on my thighs and shins from leaning on the ladder, and some very red spots where the sun screen failed.  Oh, and I have only completed about one quarter of the amount we need to do.

Still, I started my week off feeling like crap from the cold I was fighting, so I take it as a very good thing that now I only feel like crap after a long and productive day of work.

Up tomorrow even earlier, so I will need to head to bed.  Joys of home ownership!

So I have caught the damn cold that seems to be going around everywhere.  How long does it take to get over a cold?  About 10 days.  How long am I off before I have to go back to work?  About 10 days.  I am SO MAD!!!!!

Got my new swim suite, hit all my weight-loss goals and most of my work-out ones, and I just want to curl up with tea.

Fun, I was supposed to be having fun...craptastic crap!

My sister and her family (two little ones, husband, and dog) came to visit on Tuesday.  This means that I spent Monday night cleaning the house in anticipation. Then on Tuesday I left work at noon to go hang out with the niece and nephew.  Wednesday I worked 11 hours to make up for the time I took off.  And today there was more dental work.  I still need to do the after company cleaning.  (to be fair, sis left very little mess, but there are always a few things to put right and laundry to do)

One more day of work to get through, and then a week off.  I really need it, very tired.

So Starz is running the new Torchwood.  Since I don't get pay channels any more than I get British ones, I figured the switch would make little difference in how I viewed the show.  Then, our TV provider sent us a notice that as a promotional thing we would be getting a few months of a pay channel for free.  I normally ignore those notices.  This time I was like ... wait a minute.  What channel?  What months?  I can only figure that this is an intentional coincidence on the part of Starz, having a large scale free promotion at the same time they are rolling out a new show with an already existing fan base.

Unfortunately, I have also realized that we are going to be out of town on the premier night.  Oh well, back to where I started, no big deal.  The marketing strategy is an interesting one though.

Oh, and I also found out in the midst of all that dental work (with more to come this week, bleah) that my dentist has watched Torchwood.  That was a bit of a surprise.  I got to tell her about the new season starting soon.

Had dental work done today.  Two replacement fillings and one new filling on the right side.  I was shocked how draining sitting in a chair for an hour and a half can be.  There was some 'sensitivity' during the drilling, which sucked, but now that the novocaine has worn off, there is only a slight ache left.  Shouldn't be that big a deal, but I am bushed and headed for bed soon.

For today's post, have a moment from Saturday's tournament.

See, the bench these guys are sitting on was broken in such a way that you could not sit on it without it folding up under you and you ending up on the frankly swampy ground getting your ass damp.  But these three, tired from a day of shooting, found that if they sat on the bench each leaning in a different way, they could keep the pieces pushed together, the bench functional, and their backsides dry.  Hence the activity I named cooperative bench sitting.

This should be the kind of story with a grand moral at the end, and I suppose it is, but I just thought the whole thing was damn cute.

*I, on the other hand, was smart enough to bring my own little stool.  Not sure what that does to the moral of the whole thing*  ;-)
